Brittle, Harsh, just fake and bad sounding. Cleans are OK, but overdrive distortion are a nightmare. I cant get a good sound out of this thing. Unboxed one yesterday, with great expectations. So, I got the bug, figured if I loved the Champ so much, I would be absolutely snowed by the Katana.īought 2 MKII 50's combos for Christmas, one for me, one for my son. Ran across some threads comparing the Katana 50 to the Champion 40, and most of them said hands down the Katana rules and wins. BTW, I have owned Rivera, Fender Twin Reverb, Blues Jr, most Peaveys, Blackstar, and a bunch of other tube amps.įast forward, since buying this amp, I have been seeing nothing but glowing reviews about the Katana 50 and 50MKII. With the Fender footswitch, it is perfect. After a week, I did not like the amp, I absolutely loved it.

Beautiful cleans, really rich, full and punchy some really nice overdrive tones in blackface and British. especially with a small dose of reverb + delay. So I get home, plugged it in, and was shocked at how good the thing sounded. Granted, it had been years since I played one, and I was biased from my previous experience.

I had never liked Fender SS amps, especially their built in distortion. good price? liked the look? bored ?, don't remember. Modelers are designed completely differently in this respect.About a year ago, I picked up a like new Fender Champion 40 at a pawn shop for $78.00. Overloading to clipping on those components, was not a good result. amps that create their distorted tones from clipping solid state components like diodes, And, yeah hitting those with drive pedals, particularly something like a tube screamer, typically yielded bad results. For most Guitarists, the term Solid State amp, refers to amps like a Mosfet Lead 100 and similar. Although modelers are made of solid state componants, they are not solid state amps. Semantics count as per this discussion, imho. But it doesn't have modelled drive pedals. I do use my TS and Klon in front of the Blackstar Silverline, because I do use a hot Fender near breakup setting, then hit it with the pedals. Why wouldn't you? On the Axe, where I can even tweak what would be resister values and similar, on the real pedal, it's even better than a real pedal. Typically, if the modeller has it's own modeled drive pedals, I'll use them.

I am just going on what others have said.īut then, with the Katana, I was under the impression that it had modeled drive pedals. BUT, it does vary.Īgain, I have no personal experience with the Katana. And, from experience, the top modelers, or a profiler like a Kemper, are pretty spot on.Īnd, imho, even the less than top line, newer modelers do as well. The top line modelers, Helix, Axe, etc are designed to take that input from something like a tube screamer, or Klon and make the modeled amp react as the 'real' amp would. Which is why I differentiate Modelers from solid state, as it pertains to this discussion.
